This series consists of published materials relating to science and engineering collected and maintained by Robert E. Peary. Included are reports, joint resolutions, brochures, articles, maps, newspaper clippings, notes, and other writings pertaining to interoceanic issues, including the Nicaragua Canal Survey and Panama Canal. Titles include “Nicaragua; its People, Scenery, Monuments, Resources, Condition, and Proposed Canal; with One Hundred Original Maps and Illustrations” by E. G. Squier (1860); “Reports of Explorations and Surveys for the Location of a Ship-Canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, through Nicaragua, 1872-73” (1874); “Reports of Explorations and Surveys for the Location of Interoceanic Ship-Canals through the Isthmus of Panama, and the Valley of the River Napipi, by U. S. Naval Expeditions, 1875” (1879); “Monroe Doctrine and Control of Isthmus Canal” by W. H. Webb (1881);“The Panama Canal: Its History, its Political Aspects, and Financial Difficulties” by J. C. Rodrigues (1885); and “Special Intelligence Report on the Progress of the Work on the Panama Canal during the Year 1885” by W. W. Kimball (1886). There are also newspaper clippings relating to various scientific and contemporary issues.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
